It was also used as a condiment to " comfort the stomach," as well as a component scent of various perfumes, and used as a massage and aromatherapy oil. Externally, lavender oil has been used as a stimulating liniment helping to ease aches and pains of rheumatism. Some sources report that it is effective at curing headaches, especially when related to stress, and to aide against weakness associated with depression. Historically, lavender was used medicinally for various ailments, either in the form of an oil or as an herbal tea, as an aromatic, carminative, and nervine. Each packet contains 0.1 gram, which is approximately 80 seeds. Lavender is a perennial plant that is hardy down to USDA zone 5. It does not do well in heavy, continually wet soils. Once established, lavender does well in low water, drought conditions and can tolerate low temperatures. Use caution when planting other fragrant plants near lavender as it can sometimes be overpowered by other scented flowers. It can be used in a moon garden to add texture and fragrance. When in bloom, the sweet smelling blossoms attract butterflies and are said to repel deer. The Romans used it for aromatic purposes in their washing water and baths. It has been cultivated as an ornamental and medicinal plant for centuries. This forces all its energy into plant growth, rewarding your garden with beautiful large plants for the second growing season.Although commonly referred to as "English" lavender, it is said to have originated in the mountains of Northern Spain and the western Mediterranean region. Allow the top part of the root system to sit just slightly above the ground.įirst year plants should be kept clipped back so that it does not produce blooms. Also, mix sand into the soil that will be filling in the hole around the root system. When planting in clay or other dense soil, dig the hole an inch or two deeper than the root system and fill that space with coarse sand for better drainage. The favorite edible lavender varieties are the Munstead and Provence.Īs with most other Mediterranean herbs, lavender prefer dry sandy soil. Both Grosso and Provence are excellent choices for strong fragrant buds and for craft projects such as drying for bouquets and wands. This variety is note worthy, because it performs better in humid areas than other lavenders.įrench Lavender Plants are cultivars of Lavandin (lavandula x intermedia) which are cultivated mostly in France for their oils. ![]() ![]() The blooms are not as sweet smelling as other varieties so they will not attract swarms of flying insects, yet honeybees seem to enjoy them. As the MSCs (known then as marrow stromal cells) were extracted from the bone marrow, it was not surprising that they could give rise to osteoblasts. Mesenchymal stem cell (MSC) osteogenic differentiation was the first differentiation to be identified by Friedenstein et al. This could allow the investigators to use upper layers to rapidly produce differentiated osteoblasts and the lowest layer to continue growth and differentiation until an ulterior dissociation. MSCs undergoing osteogenic differentiation form several layers with distinct osteogenic properties. Cells from the upper layers displayed a higher mineralization. The dissociation of the cells on day 15 reveals that cells could resume their growth (increase in cell number) and rapidly differentiate again in osteoblasts, in 2 weeks (instead of 4 weeks). The collagenase-sensitive and trypsin-sensitive layers differ in their cluster of differentiation expression. The action of collagenase I is more efficient before the mineralization of the extracellular matrix. In the latter, the upper layers, maintained by a collagen I extracellular matrix, can be dissociated using collagenase I, while the remaining lowest layer, attached to the bottom of the dish, is sensitive only to trypsin-versene. The cells undergoing differentiation formed one layer in the neurogenic differentiation, two layers in the adipogenic differentiation and at least four layers in the osteogenic differentiation. Adipogenic and neurogenic differentiations were also performed in order to compare the cell layers. Through the sequential enzymatic detachment of the cells, we confirm the presence of several layers of differentiated cells and we compare them in terms of enzymatic sensitivity for dissociation, expression of cluster of differentiation, cytosolic calcium oscillations and osteogenic potential. Here we used this technique to reveal the presence of several cell layers during osteogenesis and to study their different properties. Very few studies report gentle dissociation of mesenchymal stem cells undergoing an osteodifferentiation process. Classical tests to prove this differentiation employ procedures such as cell fixation, cell lysis or cell scraping. Differentiation of mesenchymal stem cells to osteoblasts is widely performed in research laboratories. ![]() ![]() If you wish to compile R packages from sources, you may need to download GNU Fortran 8.2 - see the tools directory.
